It tends to be harder to remove lipstick stains from fabrics such as taffeta than from other fabrics such as cotton or polyester. This is due to taffeta’s delicate silk-like texture. When faced with cleaning a taffeta stain, it’s important to follow the steps below to ensure that the fabric isn’t further damaged.

Step 1: Blotting

Using a paper towel, blot lipstick stain until no more of the stain transfers onto the paper towel. Be very careful not to rub the stain, as it will only push the lipstick further into the fabric fibers and worsen the stain.

Step 2: Pre-Treating With Soap and Water

Mix a small amount of laundry detergent and water in a bowl to create a soapy mixture. Dip the corner of a paper towel into the mixture and dab at the stain, being sure to avoid rubbing the stain. The soap and water helps to break up the oil in the lipstick and lift it away from the fabric.

Step 3: Washing Stain

Fill a basin with warm water. Place a few drops of laundry detergent into water and stir until fully dissolved. Place taffeta item into the water and swish around stain lightly. Allow the item to soak for 10-15 minutes and then rinse it off with cold water.

Step 4: Drying the Fabric

Lay the item flat on a towel and gently press down on the stained area with another clean towel. Blot the area until it is completely dry. If stain is still present, repeat steps 1-4.
