Whether it’s your own lip color or someone else’s, lipstick stains can easily ruin your favorite sweater. If you're looking for a quick and easy way to remove it, there are a few steps you can take.
As soon as you notice a lipstick stain, it is important to act quickly in order to prevent it from setting into the fabric. Gently scrape away any excess lipstick using a spoon or butter knife. Take care not to rub the stain, as this will only spread it further.
Once you have removed as much excess lipstick as possible, place item straight into the washing machine. Set the temperature to the highest setting that is appropriate for fabric, and add a scoop of the usual detergent. Avoid using chlorine bleach, as this could make the stain permanent.
If stain remains after washing, you may need to use a spot treatment. Make an enzyme-based cleaner by mixing one tablespoon of white vinegar with two cups of cold water. Then, dampen a cloth or sponge in solution and dab it lightly on stain until it lifts away.
Once the stain has been removed, rinse the area with cold water and let the sweater air dry, avoiding direct sunlight. Once it has finished drying, give it one final check to be sure the stain is gone. If not, repeat the spot treatment until it is.
