Unfortunately, lipstick stains on garments can prove to be a tricky beast to tackle. With this in mind, it is important to use effective techniques to remove the stain without damaging the fabric. Here are a few tips regarding how to clean lipstick stains from ponchos.

Step 1: Pre-Treat with a Cleaning Solution

The first step is to make sure stain is pre-treated with a good cleaning solution. You can either make a homemade solution or purchase a specialised stain remover for the job. When using a homemade solution, combine one part liquid dishwashing detergent and 4 parts warm water. Make sure the detergent does not contain bleach as this may discolour or damage the poncho’s fabric.

For best results, apply the solution directly onto stained area and rub it gently with a soft bristled brush. The idea here is to break down and loosen up lipstick so it can be removed more easily.

Step 2: Rinse and Repeat

Once you have treated stain with cleaning solution, it is time to rinse it off. Use cold water and rinse the same area thoroughly until stain has disappeared completely. If it is still visible, repeat process of cleaning and rinsing until it is gone.

Step 3: Air-Dry and Check for Remaining Stain

After rinsing off the stain, leave garment to air-dry completely. Take a look at area when it is dry and check to see if there is still any trace of lipstick stain. If there is, go back to Step 1 and repeat the pre-treatment and rinse process.

Step 4: Spot-Clean with a Commercial Stain Remover

If the stain is still present after regular cleaning and rinsing, it is time to apply a commercial stain remover specifically designed for lipstick stains. Carefully follow the instructions on the product's label and apply it onto affected area. Leave it to sit for a couple of minutes before rinsing off.

At this point, the lip stain should have been fully removed. If not, repeat the spot-cleaning process until the stain is gone.

Step 5: Wash and Dry

Finally, you can put the poncho into the washing machine and wash it as normal. When done, let it air-dry completely before wearing it again.

Following these steps will help to effectively remove lipstick stains from your favourite ponchos.
