To start, spot test the fabric in an inconspicuous area to make sure it will not be damaged by the cleaning agents used. It is best to use a mild detergent and lukewarm water to remove the stain. Start by dabbing the stain with a clean cloth to remove as much of the lipstick as possible. Once the excess pigment has been removed, prepare a cleaning solution using lukewarm water and a few drops of mild detergent. Soak the fabric for a few minutes in the solution before gently scrubbing the stain with a soft bristled brush.

Rinse the stained area of the fabric thoroughly with cold water and then lay it flat on a dry towel. Use another clean cloth to gently press down on the fabric to remove excess moisture. Never wring the fabric as it could cause shrinkage or damage the delicate fibers. Do not dry the fabric with heat as this may cause the stain to become permanent. Instead, air dry fabric in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

Once the fabric is completely dry, check the stain to see if it is still visible. If so, repeat the cleaning process until the stain has been removed. With some patience and the right cleaning techniques, you can remove pesky lipstick stains from your favorite pieces of merino fabric quickly and easily.
