It can be distressing when you find lipstick stains on your bra, especially if the bra is a favorite or an expensive one. You may think that the only option is to throw out the bra and buy a new one, but it doesn't have to be that way. With right methods and some perseverance, you can have your bra looking like new again in no time.

1. Pre-Treat the Stain with a Stain Remover

The first step you should take is to use a pre-treatment product on the stain. These types of products are designed to break down the makeup pigment before washing so that it won't set in permanently. Look for a product specifically designed for removing makeup stains, and follow the directions carefully. For best results, allow pre-treatment to sit and work for at least five minutes before washing.

2. Wash the Bra on the Lowest Heat Setting

Once the stain has been pre-treated, you can wash the bra. Use the lowest heat setting available, as higher temperatures could cause the stain to set further. Consider adding a small amount of laundry detergent directly to the stain before putting the bra in the washer. Once cycle is complete, inspect bra for any remaining stains. If necessary, repeat this process until the stain is gone.

3. Spot Clean with Rubbing Alcohol

If the pre-treatment and washing process did not fully remove the stain, you may need to spot clean it with rubbing alcohol. Gently apply the rubbing alcohol to the stain with a cotton swab and let it soak for a few minutes. Once done, rinse area with cool water and remember to air-dry the bra to prevent fading.

4. Try Hydrogen Peroxide if Other Methods Fail

If stain is stubborn and rubbing alcohol fails to do the trick, try applying hydrogen peroxide to the affected area. Place a few drops of the peroxide directly onto the lipstick stain and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Once done, blot the area with a clean cloth and wash the bra using the instructions mentioned above.

Additional Tips and Considerations

  • Always check the garment care label before attempting any of these methods.
  • Be aware that pre-treatment products can affect the color of the fabric so always test it on an inconspicuous area first.
  • Hang the bra up to dry — never put it in the dryer.
  • Always treat the stain as soon as possible after it occurs — the longer it sits, the more difficult it will be to remove.
