First, it’s important to act quickly. Fresh ketchup stains are far easier to clean than old ones that have had time to set and dry. If you intervene early enough, you might be able to simply wipe away the ketchup with a damp rag or sponge.

If the ketchup isn’t coming off easily, next you should create a cleaning solution. Begin by mixing one part white vinegar with one part cool water. It may be necessary to increase amount of vinegar if you find that the surface is not responding to the mixture. Test a small area of the wallpaper before applying the mixture to the entire stain, as some wallpaper may not respond well to vinegar.

Once you’ve determined that your wallpaper will respond without damage, apply the vinegar-water blend to a soft cloth and generously scrub the stained area. For extra tough stains, you can try using cornstarch to absorb the stain before attempting to remove it. Be careful not to scrub too hard, as this could cause wallpaper to tear or become faded.

Finally, let the area air-dry and then give it a final rinse with cool water. The vinegar may leave behind a faint odor, but it should dissipate quickly. Once the wallpaper is dry, the ketchup stain should be completely gone!

If you follow these four steps, removing a ketchup stain from wallpaper should be easy. However, if luck isn't on your side and stain persists, it may be time to consult a professional.
