First, make sure to act quickly. Fresh ketchup stains are always easiest to remove. Soak the soiled area in cold water as soon as possible for 10-15 minutes to loosen the stain. This is key in order to ensure removal of the stain and prevent it from setting into the fabric.
Once you’ve soaked area, make a paste consisting of 1 teaspoon of non-bleach laundry detergent mixed with 1 tablespoon of white vinegar. Once you’ve combined the paste ingredients, apply it directly to the affected area and cover with a damp towel. Let the paste stay on the area for 10-15 minutes.
Next, begin to scrub the area in a circular motion with an old toothbrush. Be sure to use gentle pressure while doing this, and avoid scrubbing too hard as this can damage the fabric. Once the stain has lifted, rinse the area with cold water.
In some cases, stain may not be completely lifted after the first try. If this is the case, repeat the paste-scrub-rinse process and then launder the garment as usual. Make sure to check the garment before putting it in the dryer, as heat can cause any remaining stain to set permanently.
