Club soda is great for tackling grease-based stains, such as ketchup. To begin, use a dry cloth or sponge to remove any additional bits of ketchup from the fabric. Then, pour club soda directly onto the stain and use a clean sponge to scrub the stained area. Rinse the area with cold water and repeat until stain has been removed or lightened.
If club soda does not do the trick, mix 1 tablespoon white vinegar and 2 tablespoons mild liquid dish soap with 1 quart of warm water. Dip a sponge into this mixture and dab stained area gently. Do not rub, as this may press the stain further into material. Let sit for 10 minutes before rinsing and checking to see if the stain is gone.
If the stain remains, purchase a specialty stain remover from your local store or online. Follow directions on the bottle and apply to stain. Use a toothbrush to gently scrub area and then rinse and check to see if the stain has been removed.
If all else fails and you are still struggling to get the ketchup stain out of your trench coat, take it to your local dry cleaners. Professional dry cleaners have a variety of techniques and products at their disposal to tackle tough stains. They may even use a special type of dry cleaning fluid to help remove hard-to-remove stains.
