Tartan fabric can be a bit tricky to deal with when it comes to cleaning, so it’s best to act fast when a ketchup stain appears. The sooner you treat the stain, the better – it may even be possible to avoid washing altogether.
Blotting is a great way to remove ketchup stains from tartan. Take a damp cloth and gently dab at stain. Be careful not to rub too hard, as this could damage the fabric. Blotting should help to lift away the ketchup, but be patient – it may take a few attempts.
If blotting alone isn’t enough to remove the ketchup stain, it’s time to get out the soap and water. Dilute a small amount of detergent in lukewarm water and stir with a spoon until it reaches a soapy consistency. Dip a cloth or sponge into the soapy water and dab it onto the stain. Again, be careful not to rub too hard. Rinse with clean water and repeat until the stain disappears.
If the stain is still persistent, try using a stain remover. There are lots of stain removers on the market specifically designed for fabrics, but always make sure to check the label and choose one suitable for tartan. Apply the stain remover according to the instructions, then rinse off with clean water. You can also try soaking the stained area in cold water overnight for extra stubborn stains.
Vinegar is another great option for treating ketchup stains. Dilute white vinegar in water (half and half) and apply to the stained area. Leave for 10 minutes before rinsing off. Vinegar is a great natural cleaner and helps to break down the proteins in the ketchup and lift stain.
Now that you know how to remove ketchup stains from tartan, let’s look at ways to prevent them in first place. If you’re having a takeaway, make sure to use placemats to protect your tartan fabric. And if you’re eating a midweek dinner, add a tablecloth or runner to act as a barrier against any accidental spills.
