1. Pre-Treat the Stain

Be sure to treat the ketchup stain as soon as possible! The best way to pre-treat a ketchup stain from clothing is to use mild detergent or a prewash stain remover such as Shout or Spray N Wash. Apply this product to the stain, let it sit for about five minutes, and then gently rub the fabric together to help dissolve the stain.

2. Wash with Hot Water

Once the stain has been pre-treated, it is ready to be washed. Consider washing the stained item on its own in a separate load, or with other similarly colored items to avoid transfer of color from ketchup stain. Set your washing machine to the hottest temperature appropriate for the fabric type and use a heavy-duty laundry detergent. Heavy-duty detergents are designed to penetrate deep into fabric and break down tough stains like ketchup.

3. Repeat Process, If Necessary

If the stain persists, consider repeating the process. Use the same detergents and cleaning supplies, only this time add a cup of vinegar to the load. Vinegar helps reduce acidity of ketchup, which helps break down the stain. Additionally, you can use a small brush to scrub the fabric in circular motions, then rewash the item in hot water.

4. Allow to Air Dry

Once the stained item is washed and rinsed, hang it outside to air dry rather than putting it in dryer. Heat from the dryer could cause the stain to set, making it even more difficult to remove. Now your ketchup stain should be gone, and your garment will be looking good as new!
