Act fast after stain appears! Fresh ketchup stains are much easier to remove than those that have been sitting around for a while. Blot up as much of the ketchup as you can with a paper towel and rinse area with cool water.
After dabbing area with a wet cloth, apply a pre-treatment solution such as an enzyme-containing spot remover or a paste made with baking soda and water. Let the pre-treatment sit for 15 minutes before rinsing it away with cold water.
After the pre-treatment, start a regular wash cycle with cold water. Use a mild liquid laundry detergent and let the load finish its cycle.
Once the wash cycle is finished, check the ketchup stain to see if it has faded. If not, repeat steps 2 and 3.
When the ketchup is gone, give the item one more rinse with cold water. Then, hang to dry. Avoid the dryer as heat can set the ketchup stain, making it much more difficult to remove.
