Start by pretreating the affected area with a gentle detergent or stain remover specifically formulated for use on silk fabrics. If you don’t have access to one, any mild liquid detergent will do. To apply the detergent, simply pour a few drops onto the stained area and work in the solution with your fingers or a soft brush. Allow the solution to sit for several minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water.
Next, pour white vinegar onto the stained area and massage it into the fabric. If need be, you can use a cloth or brush to increase the effectiveness of the vinegar. Allow the vinegar to sit for 5-10 minutes before rinsing out with lukewarm water.
After stain has been thoroughly pretreated, you can wash the fabric as usual while following the care instructions provided on the clothing label. It is important to note that silk chiffon should only be hand washed–not machine washed–to avoid damaging the delicate fibers. After the wash is complete, inspect the fabric for any remaining traces of the ketchup stain before hanging it up to air dry.
If the ketchup stain is still present after washing, repeat steps 1-3 until the stain is removed. It might take several attempts to get rid of the stain completely, so be patient and keep trying until the stain is gone.
