Grab a commercial stain remover from store. Generally speaking, you should look for something specifically designed for removing protein-based stains, such as those found in ketchup. Follow the instructions on the package, but be careful: these products can be highly concentrated and should not come in contact with your skin. Once the spot has been treated, launder as usual.
If you don’t have access to a commercial stain remover, cornstarch is also incredibly effective. Simply sprinkle the cornstarch over the affected area and let it soak into the fibers. Let it sit for at least an hour before brushing off the excess powder and laundering shorts as normal.
Vinegar and baking soda are two common household items that make an excellent pair when it comes to getting ketchup stains out of shorts. Start by mixing equal parts white vinegar and water in a bowl - this mixture should be about the same consistency as regular laundry detergent. Next, dip a clean cloth into the solution and use it to rub the stain. Finally, sprinkle some baking soda onto the area and allow it to sit overnight. Once the baking soda has had time to work its magic, brush off the excess and launder the shorts as usual.
Dish soap is a surprisingly effective cleaner for ketchup stains. Start by rubbing a small amount of dish soap directly onto the stain. Then, mix 1 teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water and use the mixture to rinse the area. Let the area air dry, then simply launder the shorts as usual.
It’s always easier to prevent a ketchup stain in the first place than to try and get it out later. Here are a few handy tips for keeping your shorts safe from pesky ketchup spills:
Ketchup stains don’t have to be a hassle - with a little bit of elbow grease (and some help from the tips above), you can easily get your shorts looking fresh and new in no time. So go ahead and enjoy your summer - and don’t forget to use a napkin!
