The first step in getting ketchup stains out of your shift dress is to select the right detergent. Stick to a basic, low-sudsing detergent, such as Woolite, Dreft, or Tide Free & Gentle. The key to success is selecting a detergent that won’t leave behind any residue.
Once you’ve chosen a detergent, pretreat the stain. Start by scraping off any excess ketchup. Then, make a paste out of the detergent and water, and rub it into stain. Let the paste sit on the stain for 15 minutes before rinsing it out with cold water.
After pretreating the stain, it’s time to wash the dress. Set your machine to gentle or delicate cycle, and use cold water. Avoid using hot water as this can cause stains to set in and become permanent.
Once the washing cycle is complete, hang your shift dress outside to dry. Avoid using a dryer as the heat can cause the stain to set and become even more difficult to remove.
