Although some stains seem impossible to get rid of, most ketchup stains can be removed from scarves through careful cleaning. The method of removal depends on the type of fabric that the scarf is made of. Make sure to follow these steps when attempting to remove ketchup from your scarf:
Step 1: Test For ColorfastnessBefore proceeding, it’s important to test a hidden part of your scarf for colorfastness. To do this, mix a small amount of a mild detergent with lukewarm water and dip a cotton swab into the mixture. Gently dab the test area and then let it dry. If color of the area has not faded or bled, then proceed to the next step.
Step 2: Absorb Excess KetchupStart by absorbing any excess ketchup from your scarf. To do this, place a few layers of clean paper towel under and over the stained area and press down with a warm iron. Make sure not to iron too hot – you don’t want to scorch the fabric!
Step 3: PresoakOnce you’ve managed to absorb most of the ketchup, you should presoak the stain in a mild enzyme-based prewash stain remover. Follow the directions on the label carefully, as some prewash stain removers need to be left on for a certain amount of time before washing.
Step 4: WashWash the scarf according to the care instructions on the label. Use a mild detergent and the coolest water temperature recommended for the fabric.
Step 5: Check Results and Repeat Steps if NecessaryAfter washing, check to see if the stain has been removed. If not, repeat the process until stain is gone.
