It’s easy for ketchup stains to set if you don’t act quickly upon finding them on your satin clothing, cushions, or furniture. To keep your satin items looking pristine, here is what you need to do.
Removing ketchup stains from satin
- The first thing you should do is blot (not rub!) the area with a paper towel or a white cloth to absorb as much of the ketchup as possible. Do this gently to avoid spreading the stain further.
- Mix some dishwashing detergent with cold water, stirring until it foams. Using a soft brush (a toothbrush will do), apply soapy mixture to the stained area. Take your time to work the detergent into the fabric, but make sure not to scrub too hard.
- Allow the fabric to sit for 10 minutes. This will give the soap time to break up ketchup stain.
- Rinse the material thoroughly under cold running water. Make sure no soap residue remains.
- Once the stained area has been rinsed with water, you can try removing the residual stain by dabbing it with a cloth soaked in rubbing alcohol.
- Finally, lay the fabric flat in a sunny spot and leave it to dry. Avoid using a hairdryer or any other heat-generating tool since it may shrink the satin fabric.
Cleaning tips
- Alcohol does wonders for removing ketchup stains off satin. But before you use it, test it on an inconspicuous spot first to make sure it won’t discolor or damage the fabric.
- When drying fabric, avoid direct sunlight since it can bleach or fade the color. If using a machine, set the temperature to low.
