What You’ll Need

  • Rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide
  • Light detergent (with no bleach!)
  • White vinegar
  • Water
  • Soft cloths

Step 1: Blot the Stain

To start the cleaning process, you'll need to blot the stain with a soft cloth. Apply light pressure to absorb the ketchup and avoid spreading it around.

Step 2: Apply Rubbing Alcohol or Hydrogen Peroxide

If the ketchup stain is still visible after blotting, try applying rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. Before you begin, test your chosen product on a small, inconspicuous part of fabric to ensure it won't damage the material. Then, apply a few drops onto the stain and use a damp cloth to dab the area.

Step 3: Wash the Fabric

Fill a sink with cold water and add a light detergent without bleach. Place your pongee in the sink and let it soak for 10-15 minutes. Once the fabric has had time to soak, rinse it out with cold water.

Step 4: Create a Vinegar Solution

Combine one cup of white vinegar with one cup of cold water. Dip a cloth into the solution and dab it onto the stained area. It may take two or three applications, but the vinegar should lift the stain.

Step 5: Air Dry

Hang the fabric up to air dry. If any traces of the stain remain, repeat this process until fabric is spotless.
