When it comes to food stains, ketchup can be especially tricky to remove. The combination of tomato-based acids and sugar can be like glue when it comes to sticking to fabric. But with a little know-how and some basic cleaning products, you can restore your outerwear to its former glory.
The first step is to apply dish soap directly to stain. This will help break down the proteins in the ketchup for easier removal. Let the soap sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with cold water.
Mix together one part white vinegar and two parts cold water. Use a clean cloth to blot solution onto the stained area. Let it sit for one hour before rinsing again with cold water.
Create a paste using one teaspoon of borax and one tablespoon of oxygen bleach. Rub this mixture gently onto stained area, and let it sit for 30 minutes. When done, rinse off any remaining paste with cold water.
Wash the garment as usual and air dry. Check stained area once the garment has dried before putting it away to ensure the stain has been completely removed.
