Ketchup is a common condiment that many of us enjoy when eating anything from French fries to burgers. Unfortunately, it is also one of the trickiest foods to clean up after. Ketchup stains are particularly infamous for sticking around and not coming out easily.

Step 1: Blot the Stain

First, blot the stain with a paper towel or a cloth. Try to absorb as much of the ketchup as possible without rubbing it into the fabric. If the stain is still wet, run cold water over the fabric from back side. This will help push ketchup away from the surface of the fabric.

Step 2: Pretreat the Stain

Next, pretreat ketchup stain by applying a prewash stain remover to the area. Allow the pretreatment to soak into the fabric for a few minutes before putting it in washing machine.

Step 3: Wash the Item

When the item is ready to go in the washing machine, set the water temperature to warm or cool, depending on type of fabric. Use a laundry detergent or a laundry additive such as borax. If you're unsure about which detergent to use, check the care label for instructions.

Step 4: Check the Stain After Washing

After the washing cycle is complete, take item out of the machine and check the stain. If it's still visible, apply some stain remover directly to the area and rub it in. Then, let the item soak for about 15 minutes before washing it again. If the stain has lightened but not completely disappeared, repeat the process.

Step 5: Dry the Fabric

When the stain is no longer visible, put the item in the dryer and tumble dry it on low heat. Avoid using high heat, as this could set the stain and make it impossible to remove.
