For freshly spilled ketchup on your furniture, start by removing any excess with a butter knife or spoon. Don't rub, as this may spread the stain further into the fabric. Next, mix a solution of mild dish soap with warm water, approximately one teaspoon of soap to one cup of warm water. Dab the stain with a clean cloth and the soapy water using a blotting motion. You want to avoid scrubbing too much, as this can cause the stain to set.
For older ketchup stains, it's best to spot treat the area with a carpet or upholstery cleaner. Check the label for instructions on the amount of cleaner to use and how to apply. After applying the cleaner, use a clean, damp cloth to remove the cleaner residue. For tougher ketchup stains, try a vinegar and water solution. Mix one tablespoon of white vinegar with two cups of warm water. Again, use the blotting method to apply the solution and remove any remaining residue with a damp cloth.
If you have any leftover residue, try folding a piece of paper towel over the affected area and using a warm iron to press the residue out. Be sure not to leave iron in one place too long, as this can cause the fabric to burn. Finally, remove any left over discoloration with a fabric-safe bleach according to the instructions on the package.
