Ketchup horrors are real — one wrong move and your favorite denim is left with ugly red streaks. Fortunately, there are some tried and true methods for removing ketchup stains from cotton denim.

What You'll Need

  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda

Step 1: Blotting

First, blot the excess sauce off the fabric with a clean cloth or paper towel. This will help prevent the stain from spreading or becoming more ingrained in the fabric.

Step 2: Pre-Treat

Mix a little dishwashing liquid with some warm water. Then, dip a sponge in the mixture and gently dab the stain to pre-treat it. Make sure to work from the outside of stain inwards, so as not to spread it further.

Step 3: Wash

Next, put your garment in the washing machine on its own (with no other clothes) and use your regular detergent. Be sure to check the care label first to ensure the item can go in the washer.

Step 4: Removing Set-In Stains

If a stain still remains after the wash cycle, it’s time to make a paste. Combine equal parts vinegar and baking soda, and using a clean cloth, rub the solution onto the stain. Leave paste on for about 10 minutes, then rinse the garment with cold water.

Step 5: Dry

Finally, put the garment in the dryer. If the stain is still there after drying, repeat Steps 2 - 4 before trying again.
