What You'll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Laundry detergent
  • A bucket or bowl
  • A soft cloth

Step 1: Pre-treat the Stain

The first step to removing a ketchup stain from cotton canvas is to pre-treat the stain before laundering. To do this, mix one tablespoon of white vinegar with one tablespoon of laundry detergent in a bucket or bowl. Next, dip the cloth into the mixture and gently rub it onto stained area.

Step 2: Soak the Item

Once the pre-treatment is complete, it’s time to soak the item. Fill the bucket or bowl with lukewarm water and add a capful of detergent. Submerge stained portion of the item and let it soak for up to four hours.

Step 3: Launder the Item

After the item has soaked, it’s time to launder it. Run the item through the washer on a light cycle with warm water and a mild detergent. Once it’s done, check the stain. If it’s still visible, repeat steps 1-3 until it’s gone.

Step 4: Air Dry Item

It’s important not to put item in the dryer until the stain is completely removed, as the heat will set any remaining stain into the fabric. Instead, hang the item up to air dry and inspect it when it’s finished.
