When a ketchup stain shows up on your favorite collared shirt, don't panic! With a little persistence and the right cleaning techniques, you can often remove the stain and restore the shirt's pristine appearance.
Blotting, not rubbing, is always the best way to remove any kind of stain. Begin blotting up as much of the ketchup as you can with a paper towel. Make sure to work from the outside of the stain inwards so you don't spread it further into the material.
Mix a solution of one tablespoon of mild liquid detergent in one cup of warm water. With a clean cloth or sponge, apply the detergent solution directly to the stain. Let solution absorb into the fabric for 15 minutes before washing.
If the stain has already set in, make a paste of baking soda and water or baking soda and hydrogen peroxide, and generously rub or dab it onto the stain. Let it sit for 15 minutes before washing.
Place the shirt in the washing machine with other similarly colored items. Use warm water and a standard detergent for best results. After the wash cycle has completed, smell the stained area. If the ketchup odor is still present, repeat the wash cycle one more time.
If shirt can be bleached, add ½ cup of chlorine bleach during the second launder. This will help to brighten the colors and remove any lingering odors.
If stain still hasn't cleared after two washings, pretreat and soak again. It may take several cycles to completely remove the stain. Once you're satisfied with results, hang the shirt to dry.
Never do laundry again. Save time for things you ❤️
