The first step is to rinse the stained area in cold water. Rinsing will help remove any excess ketchup that may or may not have had a chance to set in. You want to be sure to use cold water since hot water can actually cause the stain to set further into the fabric, making it much harder to remove.
For this step, you'll need a small bowl filled with cool water and some liquid detergent of your choice. Dip your stained bandana in the bowl and let it soak for 15-20 minutes. This will help loosen the stain and make it easier to clean. Once the pre-treatment is complete, take the bandana out of the bowl and rinse thoroughly in cold water.
Work some spot remover onto the stained area and let sit for 5-10 minutes. Spot remover can help break down the ketchup and make it easier to wash out. After allowing it to sit, simply rinse the area with cold water again to remove any remaining residue.
For this step, add your bandana to the washing machine with other items of similar colors and fabrics, along with your usual detergent and fabric softener. Set the temperature to cold and the cycle to delicate. Once finished, hang to dry and examine the results.
With right method and materials, ketchup stains do not have to be end of your bandana. By following these four easy steps, you can restore your bandanas to their former glory and enjoy them without pesky ketchup stains.
