Start by blotting up any excess ketchup with a paper towel or cloth. Don't rub the stain as this can cause it to spread. Once you've done this, get a bucket of warm water and mix in a tablespoon of liquid dishwashing detergent. Dip a cloth into the mixture and gently dab the ketchup stain.

If this isn't enough to fully remove the stain, try using white vinegar. Fill a spray bottle with enough white vinegar to cover the stain, then spritz it liberally over the affected area. Let the vinegar sit for at least five minutes before rinsing the rug with cool water. Repeat this process until the stain has been removed.

To finish up, blot the area dry with a clean towel. For deeper-set stains, try using baking soda to lift the ketchup out of the fibers. Sprinkle baking soda over affected area and let it sit for an hour or two before vacuuming up the residue and repeating the steps above.

Keep in mind that if stain is particularly stubborn, it may be best to call in a professional cleaner. But with right technique and materials, you should be able to eliminate ketchup stains from area rugs with ease!
