Insect repellent can get on clothes easily, and it can be difficult to remove. The ingredients of repellent vary, so it's important to understand what kind of repellent was used on the clothing before trying to get the stains out.
First things first - try to get as much of the repellent off the clothing as you can. If the stain is still wet, use a cloth or paper towel to blot the area and soak up any extra liquid. This will help reduce the amount of repellent that has soaked into fabric.
Fill a sink or bowl with warm water, and add a mild detergent or dish soap. Gently swish the clothing around in the water to release any residue, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Repeat this process if necessary. When done, rinse clothing thoroughly with cold water.
If the stain is still visible after washing, try pretreating the area with a stain remover. Spray the stain remover onto the area, making sure all of the insect repellent is covered. Let it sit for 15-20 minutes, and then launder the clothing normally.
Once the stain remover has had a chance to work its magic, it's time to launder the clothing. Use the warmest water setting recommended for the fabric type, and use a detergent formulated for delicate fabrics. For best results, hang dry or lay out the clothing to air dry.
