Start off by choosing a detergent that is designed for washing delicates materials. Look for brands that are specifically formulated to be gentle on fabrics; this means they won't cause any undue wear and tear on your beloved sweater. Opt for a detergent that is either fragrance-free or has a mild scent.
Next, set the washer for a cold water cycle. Heat can cause stain to set more deeply in fabric, making it harder to remove. If you don't have a cold water cycle on your washing machine, fill the sink with lukewarm water.
Sprinkle some of the detergent directly onto the stain, then gently massage it in with a soft sponge or cloth. Allow the detergent to sit on the stain for 10 to 15 minutes before placing the sweater in the washer.
Add the detergent to the washing machine as usual. Place the garment inside and start the machine. Select the light wash cycle and, if possible, the delicate setting. This will give your sweater a gentler cleaning. Once the cycle has finished, examine the stain to make sure it has been fully removed.
Finally, lay the garment flat on a clean towel and roll it up from either end. This will help to remove excess moisture from the fabric. Hang your sweater up to dry and once fully dry, it should look as good as new.
