Step 1: Pretreat the Stain Immediately

If you notice a stain from insect repellent on your silk dupioni, first step is to pretreat it. Start by soaking the stained area in cold water for about 20 minutes. This will help keep the stain from setting in. Next, blot the area gently with a clean white cloth and avoid scrubbing the fabric as much as possible.

Step 2: Create a Cleaning Solution

Create your own cleaning solution by mixing one teaspoon of liquid dish soap with a quarter cup of white vinegar in one quart of cold water.

Step 3: Apply the Cleaning Solution

Once your cleaning solution is prepared, begin by applying a bit of it directly to the stain and allow it to sit for 5 minutes. Then, use a sponge to gently blot the area. Be sure to rinse out the sponge periodically to ensure that you aren’t just rubbing the stain further into the fabric.

Step 4: Rinse With Water and Dry

Once you’ve removed as much of stain as possible, rinse the fabric with cool water. Then, let it air-dry, or machine dry on a low-heat setting. If the stain is still visible after the fabric is completely dry, repeat the cleaning steps until it has been removed.
