Rayon is a lightweight and versatile fabric that is perfect for summer wear. Unfortunately, its delicate fibers can easily become stained from insect repellents. To successfully clean insect repellent from rayon, it's important to use correct detergents and procedures.

Step 1: Pre-Treat the Stain

If there is a visible stain, you want to pre-treat it with a solvent-based stain remover or rubbing alcohol. Apply the cleaner directly onto the fabric and gently massage it into the material. After a few minutes, insect repellent should start to dissolve.

Step 2: Remove Excess Stain

Once the area is saturated with the cleaning solution, blot the fabric with a clean white cloth or paper towel to absorb any remaining residue. Do not rub fabric, as this could cause the stain to spread.

Step 3: Wash Garment

Place garment in a washing machine and add a mild detergent. Use cold water and the gentlest cycle of your washing machine, as high temperatures and harsh cycles can damage rayon fibers. After the cycle is complete, inspect the garment to make sure stain has been removed.

Step 4: Dry the Item

To prevent shrinkage, hang the garment to air dry (not in direct sunlight). Once item is completely dry, inspect it to make sure the stain is gone.

Bottom Line

With a few simple steps, you can remove insect repellent stains from a rayon fabric. Make sure to use the correct techniques and materials when cleaning, and you'll be able to restore your favorite garments to their original condition.
