It can be a pain to try to remove this stubborn stain, but thankfully, there are methods that can make it less of a hassle.

Step-by-Step Process for Cleaning Insect Repellent Stain from Polyester

  • Soak the stained fabric in cold water for about 5 minutes.
  • Mix together a solution of 1 cup of warm water and 2 tablespoons of white vinegar.
  • Dab the solution onto the stained area with a clean cloth and allow it to sit for 15 minutes.
  • Rinse the stained area with cold water.
  • Use a mild laundry detergent and a toothbrush to scrub the stain gently.
  • Rinse off the detergent with cold water.
  • Repeat Steps 3-6 if necessary.
  • Air dry fabric or set the delicate cycle on your washing machine.

Additional Tips for Removing Insect Repellent Stains from Polyester

  • Pretreat the stain with a liquid laundry detergent before washing.
  • If the stain has been there for several hours, add 1/3 of a cup of baking soda to the wash cycle to help lift the stain.
  • Use a prewash stain remover, such as Shout, to help break down the stain before washing.
  • Spray the stained area with a citrus-based cleaner, such as Orange Strength, and let it sit for 10 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water.
  • Consider using an enzyme-based cleaner, like Zout, on the stain before laundering.
