Insect repellents are an effective way to fend off pests, however, the product can leave behind unpleasant stains. Certain fabrics such as piqué can seem particularly difficult to clean. The first step is to quickly get rid of any excess insect repellent on the fabric. Use a clean cloth to blot the area and gently scrape off any remaining residue with a dull knife or spoon. Then rinse the affected area with cold water.
Next, pre-treat the stained area with a laundry detergent that contains enzymes. These enzymes help to break down the chemical bonds of the repellent, making it easier to remove. Apply the detergent directly to the stain, scrub it in with a soft-bristled brush, then let it sit for five to 10 minutes to give it time to take effect.
Once the pre-treat step is complete, launder the fabric with warm or hot water, depending on the care instructions on the garment's label. If stain is still visible after the wash, repeat steps one and two before drying the item in the dryer. If the stain has been completely removed, hang dry or tumble dry on the lowest setting.
