Pre-Spotting Treatment

Start by pre-treating any insect repellent stain on your mules before attempting any other cleaning methods. Lightly dampen a cloth with cold water and gently blot stained area until the area is saturated. This will help remove any debris or dirt on mules. If there are any spots left, use a small amount of an all-purpose cleaner to spot treat. Gently scrub the area with a soft cloth in circular motions to loosen the stain. Rinse the area with cold water and let it air dry.

Cleaning with Detergent and Water

Mix a solution of mild detergent and cold water. Place your mules in solution and allow them to soak for 10 to 15 minutes. After soaking, remove the mules and use a soft brush to gently scrub the stained area until any residue has been removed. Rinse off the mules with clean water and dry them with a cloth. Do not put the mules in the dryer as this may set the stain.

Remove Stubborn Stains with Ammonia

For stubborn stains, you can use ammonia to make sure it is completely removed from mules. Mix one teaspoon of clear ammonia with a quarter of a cup of cold water. Dab the mixture onto the stain with a cloth and let it sit for 5 minutes. Dab the area again with a damp cloth to help remove the stain. Rinse your mules with cold water and allow them to air dry.

Preventing Insect Repellent Stains

To avoid having to deal with insect repellent stains in the future, try to keep your mules away from any insect repellent sprays. If you do get any spray on your mules, make sure to blot up any excess as soon as possible. Take extra care when you are spraying bug repellent near your mules, as it can easily get on your shoes.
