Step 1: Blot the Stain

The first step you should take when dealing with an insect repellent stain is to blot it with a cloth or paper towel. This will help remove surface stain, but may not completely clear away the residue. Make sure to move from the outside inwards to prevent the stain from spreading.

Step 2: Pre-Treat the Stain

Once you have blotted the stain, you can now begin the pre-treatment process. Create a solution of one teaspoon of a mild detergent, like Woolite, and one cup of warm water. Dip the corner of a white cloth or paper towel into the solution and use it to gently dab the stain. Don’t rub the cloth around the stain, as it may cause fabric to tear or unravel.

Step 3: Hand Wash Garment

Once the pre-treatment has been applied, fill a sink or bowl with cold water and submerge the garment. Gently agitate the clothing to help remove stain. Don’t scrub the fabric, as this could damage the material. You might want to add a bit of laundry detergent, but make sure it is especially formulated for delicate fabrics.

Step 4: Rinse and Hang Dry

Once the garment has been hand-washed, you can then rinse it off in cold water. Make sure to double-check that all of the insect repellent has been removed before wringing out the excess water. It is important to avoid using an electric dryer on your J Jill clothing as this may weaken the fibers. Instead, hang the item up somewhere out of direct sunlight where it can air dry.
