Pre-Treating the Stain

Gently brush dirt and debris away from the stained area. If fabric is delicate, use a vacuum cleaner with a nozzle attachment and avoid disturbing it further. Dip a clean cloth into lukewarm water, then use it to dampen the stain. Blot gently until the repellent is absorbed. Detergent isn't usually needed, but if necessary mix a few drops into the water.

Removing the Stain

Place the garter onto a clean surface. Use a damp cloth or a soft-bristled brush to apply a generous layer of lemon juice to the stain. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes before rinsing off the lemon juice and gently blotting the area with a clean cloth. If the stain remains, apply a few drops of ammonia to a clean cloth and dab it onto affected area. Use a damp cloth to rinse away the ammonia, then allow the garment to air dry.

Stain Prevention

Spraying insect repellent onto clothing can be tricky, and it's easy to get stains. To help keep your garter looking like new, try these tips:

  • Spray repellent away from your clothing and onto your skin.
  • Use a newspaper or cardboard as an intermediary between repellent and your clothes.
  • Avoid applying too much repellent; a little bit goes a long way.
  • If possible, use a natural repellent that won't cause staining.
