The first step in removing insect repellent stains is to pre-treat the stained area with a gentle laundry soap. Work the soap into stain until it has been well-covered. Let the soap sit for a few minutes before moving on to the next step.
Fill a sink or basin with warm water. Add a small amount of mild detergent and swish it around to create soapy bubbles. Place the pre-treated item into the basin and let it soak for around 30 minutes. After time has elapsed, check to see if the stain has lightened. If it hasn’t, add more detergent and continue soaking for another 15-30 minutes.
Once the stain has sufficiently lightened, rinse the affected area under warm running water. Next, place garment in your washing machine with a mild detergent and wash normally. Double check garment after washing it; if the stain is still present, run it through the washing cycle once more.
After washing, hang article of clothing up to dry or put it in a clothes drying machine. It is best not to place the item in the dryer on high heat or it might cause stain to set permanently. Once the article of clothing is completely dry, give it a once-over to make sure the stain has been completely removed. If not, repeat above steps until the stain has been removed.
