Step 1: Blot the Stain With a Clean Cloth

Gently dab affected area with a clean, dry cloth to absorb as much of the insect repellent as possible. Do not rub the cloth against the stain, as this can cause it to spread.

Step 2: Treat With Vinegar and Water Solution

Mix one part vinegar to two parts water in a bowl, then dip a clean cloth into the solution. Blot the insect repellent stain with the cloth, being careful not to spread the stain further. Allow the solution to sit for several minutes, then rinse the area with clean water.

Step 3: Launder as Usual

Machine wash the garment on a regular cycle with warm water and your usual detergent. Do not use fabric softener, as this may make the stain more difficult to remove. Once the wash cycle is complete, check garment to make sure stain is completely gone.

Step 4: Air Dry

To avoid any damage to the down filling, hang the garment up to air dry. If the stain is still visible after the air drying process, repeat steps 2 and 3 until the stain is completely gone.

Tips For Avoiding Insect Repellent Stains

  • Wear light-coloured clothing when outdoors, as dark colours tend to show insect repellent stains more easily.
  • When applying insect repellent, try to spray the product on your skin rather than directly onto your clothing.
  • Avoid spraying bug repellent near your down jacket, as even small amounts of overspray can cause discolouration.
