Check the Label First

Before attempting any of following methods, it is important to read the care label on the garment. Check if a specific cleaning method is recommended by the manufacturer and follow instructions exactly. If the label does not specify how to clean the stain, proceed with caution.

Method 1: Soap & Water

The most basic method for removing an insect repellent stain involves soap and water. You will need a mild detergent such as hand soap and a sink or wash basin. Fill the sink or wash basin with warm water and add mild detergent. Then, submerge the stained area of garment in the soapy water and let it sit for 15-20 minutes.

Once the garment has been soaking in the soapy water, gently scrub the stained area with a soft-bristled brush. Rinse the garment in cold water and repeat as necessary until stain is gone. Finally, launder the garment as normal according to the care instructions.

Method 2: Rubbing Alcohol

If the soap and water method doesn't work, try using rubbing alcohol. You will need rubbing alcohol, a cotton swab, and a small bowl. Place a few drops of the rubbing alcohol into the bowl and dip the cotton swab into it.

Gently blot the stained area of the shirt with cotton swab. Do not rub too hard or you may damage the fabric. Once the stain has been blotted, rinse the area with cold water. Repeat as needed until the stain comes out. Then, launder shirt as normal.

Method 3: Vinegar & Water

Another method for removing an insect repellent stain involves vinegar. You will need white vinegar and a small bowl. Fill the bowl with equal parts white vinegar and water and mix until combined. Dip a cloth or sponge into the mixture and gently blot stained area.

Repeat as needed until the stain fades. Once the stain is gone, rinse the area with cold water and then launder the shirt as normal. Do not use this method on delicate fabrics or colors.

Conclusion

Removing an insect repellent stain from a collared shirt can be a difficult task. But with right cleaning methods and some patience, it is possible to get rid of the stain. Hopefully these methods have helped you in restoring your shirt.
