Removing Insect Repellent Stains from Cotton Chinos

Cotton chinos are one of the more versatile items in a wardrobe. They can look great with a dressy blouse but still remain casual enough to wear with a T-shirt. So, it's no surprise insect repellent stains happen. Here are a few top tips for removing insect repellents from cotton chinos:

  • Start by scraping off any excess repellent with a plastic spatula and apply warm water.
  • Make a paste of equal parts liquid detergent, borax, and white vinegar.
  • Using a soft cloth or brush, work the mixture into the fabric and let it sit for at least 15 minutes.
  • Rinse with cold water and, if needed, repeat the process until all residue is gone.
  • Rinse and launder as usual with a mild detergent.

  • Mix two tablespoons of liquid dish soap and one cup warm water in a bowl.
  • Using a soft cloth or brush, work the solution into the stained area.
  • Rinse with cool water and repeat the process until all the residue is gone.
  • Allow stain to air dry and then launder as normal.

Preventing Future Insect Repellent Stains

To avoid getting insect repellent on your clothes, always pay attention when you're spraying. Hold the can at arm's length and spray away from yourself. Make sure to check clothing labels before applying bug repellent to make sure it won't damage fabric.
