The first thing you need to do is identify kind of ink that was spilled. If it was a water-based product, such as fountain pen ink, water-based markers, or printer ink, then proceed to the next step. If it was a solvent-based product, like permanent markers, leather markers or calligraphy ink, you’ll need a different method. For solvent-based ink, you can use rubbing alcohol on a damp cloth, but test it on an inconspicuous area first.

If you’re dealing with water-based ink, the next step is to grab a small bowl and mix together one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid with one cup of warm water. Use a white cloth to blot the stain, being careful not to rub the fabric since this will spread the ink even more. After blotting the stain, use a clean rag to dab at it with the dishwashing mixture. Be sure not to press too hard into the fabric, otherwise you may cause irreversible damage.

Once you’ve treated the stain with cleaning solution, rinse it with cold, clean water. Let the fabric air dry, but don’t put it in the dryer and risk further setting the stain. If the stain is still visible after it’s dried, repeat the process again until it’s gone.

And there you have it, three simple steps on how to clean ink stains from wool. This cleaning process also works on other fabrics, so don’t worry if you get ink on something else. Just be sure to check what type of ink it is before following these steps.
