Things You Need

Before you tackle ink stains on your tartan fabric, make sure you have the following items ready:

  • A dry cleaning sponge or dry cloth
  • Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
  • A 10 percent hydrogen peroxide solution
  • Paper towels
  • Vinegar

Step 1: Blot the Stain with a Dry Cloth

Start by dabbing stained area of fabric with a clean, dry cloth. This will help absorb some of the excess ink. Do not rub it in — that will just spread the stain further.

Step 2: Apply Isopropyl Alcohol

Pour some rubbing alcohol onto a dry cleaning sponge and gently dab it onto the stained area. Be sure to use a clean section of the sponge for each dab. Continue until the stain starts to fade away.

Step 3: Treat with Hydrogen Peroxide

Mix together a 10 percent hydrogen peroxide solution and pour it onto a paper towel. Gently dab the affected area with the solution. You may need to repeat this step a few times for stubborn stains. Once stain is gone, rinse the fabric with cold water.

Step 4: Remove Any Remaining Residue

If there is any remaining residue, mix together equal parts vinegar and water and apply it to a clean cloth. Gently dab the stained area with the damp cloth. Rinse the fabric with cold water when the stain is gone.
