Step 1: Blot Up Excess Ink

The first step is to blot up as much of the excess ink as you can. This will prevent the stain from seeping further into the fabric and making it harder to remove. Use a damp cloth to soak up any excess ink, then put some paper towels down on the soiled area and press firmly to absorb remainder.

Step 2: Use Alcohol-Based Cleaners

Once the cloth and paper towels have absorbed the ink, apply an alcohol-based cleaner to the stained area. Rub the cleaner into the fabric in gentle circles using a clean cloth. Do not rub too hard, as this can damage the fabric. Allow the solvent to sit for a few minutes, then rinse off with cold water.

Step 3: Use Sufficient Detergent

After rinsing off the alcohol-based cleaner, apply a generous amount of detergent to the stain. Work the detergent into the fabric with your fingers or a soft brush, then rinse off the detergent with cold water. Be sure to rinse thoroughly, as any remaining detergent can cause the fabric to stiffen and discolor.

Step 4: Air Dry

Once you have rinsed off the detergent, hang the shearling up and allow it to air dry. To speed up the process, you can use a fan or hair dryer set to cool. Once the shearling is completely dry, inspect the area to make sure all the ink has been removed. If any stubborn spots remain, repeat the previous steps until they are gone.

FAQ

What kind of cleaners should I use for shearling?

For ink stains, use an alcohol-based cleaner such as rubbing alcohol or a specialized leather cleaner. Always test the cleaner on a hidden area first to make sure it won't damage the shearling.

How long should I let cleaner sit?

Once you have applied the cleaner to stain, let it sit for five to ten minutes before rinsing it off. This will give the cleaner time to break down the ink and make it easier to remove.

Can I use a washing machine to clean shearling?

No. Shearling is delicate and prone to shrinkage, so it should never be washed in a machine. Instead, hand-wash garment or take it to a professional dry cleaner.
