Tools you'll need

  • Dish soap
  • White vinegar
  • Oxygen bleach
  • Hairdryer
  • Soft cloth
  • Cotton swab

Step 1: Pre-Treat the Stained Area

Before you take any action, make sure you expose the stain to light and air as soon as possible; this will minimize the chances that it will set in permanately. To pre-treat the stain, blot it with a cloth dampened with warm water. Do not rub or scrub the fabric.

Step 2: Use Soap and Vinegar

Mix together one teaspoon of liquid dish soap and one tablespoon of white vinegar. Apply mixture to the stain, using either your fingers or a soft cloth. Allow the mixture to sit on fabric for at least five minutes.

Step 3: Rinse with Water

Use a cloth dampened with cool water to rinse away soap and vinegar mixture. Blot wet fabric until the stain begins to fade.

Step 4: Apply Oxygen Bleach

Mix together two teaspoons of oxygen bleach and two tablespoons of lukewarm water. Apply the solution to the stained area, and allow it to sit on the fabric for up to 30 minutes.

Step 5: Rinse and Dry

Use a cloth dampened with warm water again to rinse away the oxygen bleach solution. Blot the fabric until all of the solution is removed. Next, lay the scarf flat and use a hairdryer set on its lowest setting to dry. Make sure not to hold the dryer too close to the fabric.

Step 6: Advanced Techniques for Stubborn Stains

For stubborn stains, you may need to apply additional treatments. Mix together one part alcohol with three parts water. Apply this solution to stained area with a cotton swab and allow it to sit for a few minutes before rinsing with warm water. You may need to repeat this process several times before the stain is gone. For even more stubborn stains, try gently rubbing the stain with an eraser.

Prevent Ink Stains Before They Start

With a few simple steps, you can keep ink stains away from your scarf. Whenever you're carrying a pen, use a pocket protector or secure it in a secure pouch. If a pen should happen to leak while in your pocket, use a cloth to blot away the stain immediately. Finally, make sure to check your pens regularly for any signs of wear and tear.
