Most ink stains start off as wet splotches on fabric. As soon as you notice the ink stain, gently remove any excess ink with a paper towel or absorbent cloth. Avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain further. If there are still drops of ink remaining, dab them up with a sponge soaked in cold water.
Once the excess ink has been removed, pre-treat the stain by applying a small amount of laundry detergent directly to the stain. Use a brush or sponge to work the detergent into the stain, and then let it sit for about 10 minutes. This will help to loosen the stain and make it easier to remove.
After pre-treating the stain, place the poncho in the washing machine on a gentle cycle using cold water. To ensure that the stain is completely removed, add some white vinegar to the wash. Once the cycle is finished, hang the poncho to dry so that the stain does not set into the fabric.
Once the poncho is dry, check to see if the ink stain is still visible. If it is, repeat steps 2 and 3. You may need to do this several times before the stain is completely gone. If the stain is still stubbornly clinging to fabric, try submerging the poncho in a mixture of water and baking soda overnight to loosen it up.
