The first step is to find out what kind of material your evening gown is made of. Depending on the fabric type, methods to clean ink stains vary. Knowing which type of material you have will help you decide what cleaning supplies to use, and whether or not you should take it to a dry cleaner.
If your gown is made of natural fabrics such as cotton, silk, or wool, dabbing the stain with rubbing alcohol is your best option. Once you’ve applied the alcohol, blot dry with a clean, white cloth. Never rub or scrub the fabric as this could cause damage.
If you have an acrylic, polyester, rayon, or acetate evening gown, you will need to take a different approach. Start by rubbing a small amount of dishwashing liquid into the ink stain with a white cloth. Next, rinse thoroughly with water, and then sponge with cleaning vinegar and cool water.
When washing your evening gown, use lukewarm water and gentle detergent. Hang or lay flat to dry in order to prevent any shrinkage or loss of shape.
For stubborn ink stains, one last resort would be to take gown to a professional dry cleaner. With the right supplies and knowledge, they should be able to safely get the stain out without causing any damage to the fabric.
