Ink stains can be a real challenge to remove from any fabric, let alone espadrilles. Espadrilles are a great summertime footwear choice but those stains can make your shoes look unsightly. Fortunately, we've got the tips and tricks you need to erase ink like it never existed.

Before You Start: Determine the Type of Ink Stain

Before you attempt to clean an ink stain, it's important to identify whether it is water-based or oil-based. Look at the instructions on the back of the ink cartridge or pen to determine which type of ink it is. Oil-based ink usually requires a stronger cleaning agent to remove.

Removing Water-Based Ink

For water-based ink stains, start by blotting the stain with a clean, white cloth. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing as this can damage the fabric. If the cloth becomes stained, switch to a new one to avoid re-depositing the ink onto the espadrille.

Next, mix equal parts of lukewarm water and laundry detergent. Dip a cloth into the mixture and blot the stain. As before, avoid scrubbing or applying too much pressure. Rinse the area with cool water after cleaning and let the espadrille air dry.

Removing Oil-Based Ink

Oil-based ink requires a slightly different approach. Start by covering the stain with a thick layer of cornstarch, leave aside for 10 minutes or until dry. This helps absorb the stain and make it easier to remove.

Mix one part dish soap with one part rubbing alcohol, then use a cloth to blot stain. Rinse with cool water and repeat until stain is gone. Let the espadrille air dry.

Other Tips & Tricks

For tough stains, try using a small amount of nail polish remover on a cotton ball. Dab the stain, then rinse with cool water and blot with a clean, white cloth. White vinegar also works well for removing ink stains, just remember to dilute it in equal parts of water.
