Identifying the Stain

The first step to cleaning any stain is to identify what type of stain it is. Ink stains come in different varieties, so it's important to take a minute to identify the specific type of ink you're dealing with. Look for color, consistency and whether the ink is water-based or permanent.

Preparing the Fabric

Once you identify the type of stain, it's important to pre-treat the fabric before attempting to clean it. To do this, turn the fabric inside out and soak it in room-temperature water for 30 minutes. This will help to loosen and break down the ink particles, making them easier to remove.

Cleaning the Stain

Once the fabric has been pre-treated, it's time to tackle the stain. It's best to use a targeted cleaning agent that is designed to treat ink stains, such as a laundry detergent specifically designed to remove ink. Apply the detergent directly to the stain and let sit for 10 minutes, then scrub vigorously with a toothbrush or soft cloth to break up the stain.

If the stain is still not coming out, mix 1 tablespoon of white vinegar with 1 cup of warm water and apply directly to the stain. Let it sit for 10 minutes then rinse with cold water. Repeat if necessary.

Drying the Fabric

Once ink stain is removed, be sure to dry the fabric thoroughly. Hang garment in a sunny spot to air dry, or if you need to speed up drying process, place the item in the dryer using the lowest possible heat setting.
