What You'll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Oxygen-based bleach (e.g. OxiClean)
  • Borax
  • Dishwashing detergent
  • Soft cloths

Inspection & Pre-Treatment

Before you begin any kind of cleaning, take the garment outside to examine the stain. If it is still wet, blot it as much as possible with a soft cloth or paper towel. Don’t rub the item, as this can cause the ink to set in more deeply.

Vinegar Solution

Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water. Use a soft cloth to apply the mixture directly to the stained area and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. Rinse the solution off with cold water and check the area to see if stain has been removed. If not, move on to the next step.

Oxygen-Based Bleach

Create a solution of ¼ cup oxygen-based bleach mixed with one gallon of cold water. Place the garment in the mixture and let it soak for up to an hour. Remove fabric from the solution and check to see if the stain has been successfully removed. If not, move on to the next step.

Borax & Detergent Solution

Mix one tablespoon of Borax with one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid and two cups of lukewarm water. Gently rub the solution into the stain and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. Then, rinse garment off with cold water and check the stained area. If the stain is still visible, repeat process.

Conclusion

By following the steps outlined in this guide, you should be able to remove ink stains from your Dashiki with relative ease. However, if the stain is still visible after attempting all of these cleaning techniques, it may be time to bring it to a professional cleaner.
