Materials Needed

  • Dish-washing liquid
  • White vinegar
  • Gentle scrub brush or sponge
  • Clean cloth
  • Hydrogen peroxide (optional)

Step 1: Spot Test

Before attempting to clean any ink stain from your cotton canvas item, perform a spot test on a small inconspicuous area of the fabric. This will help ensure that the cleaning method you use won’t damage the fabric.

Step 2: Soak the Stain

Mix equal parts of dish-washing liquid with white vinegar and pour it over the stained area, allowing it to soak into the fabric for 15-30 minutes. The solution should be strong enough to break up the ink but gentle enough to not harm cotton.

Step 3: Gently Scrub

After soaking, use a gentle scrub brush or sponge to work the solution into the fabric. Go slowly and gently so as not to damage fabric. Work the solution until the stain is broken up and dissipates.

Step 4: Rinse and Dry

Rinse and dry item as you normally would, using a clean cloth. If stubborn stains persist, try using a hydrogen peroxide solution (three parts water to one part peroxide). Allow it to soak for a few minutes before rinsing and drying.

Prevent Stains

To help prevent future stains, be sure to treat your canvas items with a protective coating to repel spills and stains. Follow the instructions provided on the label of the protective treatment and reapply as necessary.
