The type of ink stain you’re dealing with will determine which cleaning method is best. If the stain is fresh and still wet, begin by blotting the area with a dry cloth or paper towel. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing, as this can make the stain worse. If the stain has already dried, scrape any excess ink off the fabric with a dull knife or spoon.
Once the area is prepped, it’s time to treat it with a specialized cleaning solution. For water-based ink (like from a ballpoint pen), mix one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid and one tablespoon of white vinegar together in a bowl of warm water. Dip a cloth into solution and gently dab the stain with mixture, working from the outside of the stain inwards.
Oil-based inks (like from a permanent marker) require a different approach. Try dabbing the stain with rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover, or hairspray. Whatever product you choose, make sure to read manufacturer's instructions when applying it to fabric.
Once the stain has been treated, rinse the fabric with cold water and then launder it as usual. It’s important to check stain is completely gone before drying the garment in order to avoid setting the stain permanently.
