What You Need
- A clean cloth
- Dishwashing detergent
- Distilled white vinegar
- Rubbing alcohol
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Scrape off excess hairspray. Use a knife or other sharp object to scrape off as much of the hairspray as you can. Be careful not to scrape too hard or you may damage the fabric.
- Apply a pre-treater. Mix 1 tablespoon of dishwashing detergent and 1 teaspoon of distilled white vinegar in a cup of warm water. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and gently rub it on the stain to break down the hairspray residue. Let the pre-treater sit for 5-10 minutes before proceeding to the next step.
- Rinse with warm water. Soak a clean cloth in warm water and gently blot stained area to rinse away the pre-treater. Avoid rubbing the fabric as this can cause further damage to fibers.
- Apply rubbing alcohol to stain. Saturate a clean cloth with rubbing alcohol and dab it directly on the stain. Let the alcohol sit for a few minutes before continuing.
- Rinse with cold water. Rinse the stained area with cold water using a clean cloth. This will help set the dye of the fabric and prevent the stain from spreading further.
- Launder as usual. Wash garment according to the manufacturer's instructions. If possible, use a stain-fighting laundry detergent for extra stain-fighting power.
Tips for Preventing Stains
- Make sure to apply hairspray evenly and away from clothing to avoid staining.
- Wipe up spills as soon as possible to prevent stain from setting in.
- Always read care instructions of the garment before attempting to remove a stain.
- If the stain is particularly stubborn, consider taking garment to a dry cleaner for professional cleaning.
